The 2012 U.S. Open is just around the corner! The 2012 championship golf game will be played at The Olympic Club in San Francisco from June 14-17, 2012.  Prior to this year, four U.S. Open golf championships were played at the San Francisco locale, including the 1955, 1966, 1987 and 1998 games.

Here are four fun facts you may or may not know about the U.S. Open Championship Golf Tournament:

  1. 11 U.S. Open Championship Golf Tournaments have been played on California golf courses (four at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, five at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, one at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla and one at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles).
  2. Two U.S. Open Championship Golf Tournaments are scheduled to be played in California in the next eight years (2012 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco and 2019 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach).
  3. The U.S. Open Championship Golf Tournament was canceled six times in its history – 1917 and 1918 due to World War I and 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.
  4. The winner of the very first U.S. Open, played in 1895, was Horace Rawlins. Rawlins defeated nine other golfers on the 9-hole at Newport Golf and Country Club in Rhode Island. Rawlins played in 15 more U.S. Opens and had a best finish of second place in those matches.

How can you get involved and stay up to date on all things U.S. Open? Purchase your tickets to the championship tournament today at www.usga.org/tickets. Plus, we’ll continue to keep you updated and bring you information you’ll want to know as the date gets closer.

At Stonebrae, we’re excited the 2012 tournament is being hosted so close to home! Checking out the game in person and watching the world’s best players compete may just ignite your itch to play as you make your way to San Francisco for the big match. So, take some time to check out the award-winning golf course we have here at TPC Stonebrae. Named by Travel + Leisure Golf as “One of the Best New Golf Courses for 2007,” the course’s par-72, 7,200-yard layout was designed by world-renowned Scottish golf course architect David McLay Kidd to blend harmoniously with its unspoiled surroundings of the East Bay, promising a game played that you won’t soon forget.

For the past 30 days, TPC Stonebrae has been using a new method of golf course maintenance that can only be described as astounding! With the implementation of a crew of goats to graze the Stonebrae golf course, it’s likely you may have seen the crew a few times over the course of the month. But in case you missed this exciting addition to our agronomy team, here’s a short recap:

Week 1: During week one, the goats primarily grazed the areas in and around Holes 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

Wonder no more what 400 goats look like!

Grazing their first location at Hole 11.

Week 2: The goats were moving faster than expected, so we added few additional areas for this crew to clean up, including Holes 7, 10 and 18.

Hole 10 prior to being cleaned up by the goat crew.

Hole 12 after it had been grazed.

Week 3: This week the goats were moved to graze the slope left of the practice center by the main road, down to the home lots.

Look at them go!

Check out this image of Hole 10 before grazing.

And after grazing!

Week 4: This is the final week the goats were on-site. Grazing happened between the 1st and 2nd fairways on Hole 12. Then they began work right of the cart path by the Hole 12 tee and moved down the right side of the Hole 6 fairway.

These goats are getting ready for a full day of grazing!

Working near the roadside.

We hope you enjoyed seeing the goats around as much as we did! They will certainly be missed, but don’t worry because they’ll be back again! We’d also like to say a special thank you to our agronomy team for their continued efforts to maintain TPC Stonebrae as naturally as possible, upholding the Stonebrae mission to preserve the natural spaces in and around Stonebrae in the most environmentally sensitive way.

Accomplishing a goal to raise over a quarter-million dollars for Bay Area charities and non-profit organizations is kind of a big deal! That’s why each year TPC Stonebrae hosts its championship tournament to raise money to give back to the community. Now the countdown has begun and we’re officially less than one month away from the annual TPC Stonebrae Championship.

April 11th – 15th, 2012, you’re invited to attend the TPC Stonebrae Championship at picturesque TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, CA. The tournament will include the Jerry Rice Pro-Am driven by Audi on Wednesday, April 11th.  Back for its third consecutive year, this is your chance to watch celebrities like Jerry Rice play alongside PGA TOUR STARS in real tournament conditions while benefiting charity.

And, as if that weren’t enough, The Birds Nest on the ninth green will return for the Birdies for Beer promotion! This hangout spot will be open to the public Wednesday – Sunday from 9:00am to sundown, allowing for ample time to get up close and personal with the players. Each birdie or eagle netted by tournament players results in $3 and $2 beers for everyone in attendance for five minutes. And with all proceeds benefiting Bay Area charities – it’s kind of big deal!

This is one big deal event you won’t want to miss! So be sure to purchase your tickets to this exciting event before it’s too late by visiting TPCfun.com.

In an effort to explore new golf course maintenance technologies and strategies, we invited some guests to help us with our vegetation management plan. On February 28, we welcomed a herd of 400 goats to graze on 25 acres of naturalized vegetation. Over the next 30 days, the goats will work to maintain 30 acres of overgrowth in the native areas around the course. The herd of goats are being accompanied by a fulltime shepherd and dog as they eat most of the thistle and harding grass down to between 2-4” around holes 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12. Let’s get an up-close and personal look at our new maintenance crew on the move!

You may be asking – why were goats used to maintain the golf course? Well, the answer is simple. The fairways and roughs of a golf course are often covered in weeds and large sections of other vegetation, and golf balls are frequently lost there. That’s where the goats come in. Goats actually possess a unique trait that differentiates them from almost every other type of livestock – they prefer to eat brush and foliage over grass because they are ‘browsers’ rather than ‘grazers.’ To give you a better idea, a goat’s diet is made up of 60 percent brush and foliage whereas a cow’s diet is only made up of 10-15 percent brush and foliage.

Plus, the goats move at high speeds, obliterating weeds from the ground level up. By standing on their back legs, goats are able to reach upwards of six feet and eat everything in their sight. It’s easy to see why the goat makes for the perfect golf course maintenance animal. In our effort to preserve the natural spaces in and around Stonebrae in the most environmentally sensitive way, we thought it only fitting to use the most natural of resources to maintain our community and yours!
